In traditional manufacturing, you might choose between wood, steel, or rubber. In 3D printing, we choose between different types of Filament. Here is a breakdown of the most common materials we use at Parker’s 3D Prints to help you decide which one is right for your project.
1. PLA (The "Standard" Choice)
What is it? Polylactic Acid. It is a biodegradable plastic made from cornstarch or sugarcane.
Think of it like: Hard wood or stiff cardboard.

Best For: Visual prototypes, figurines, display models, and items that will stay indoors.

Pros: It creates the best-looking parts with sharp details. It comes in the widest variety of colors (including matte, silk, and sparkly). It is also the most affordable option.

Cons: It hates heat. If you leave a PLA part in a car on a summer day in Georgia, it will melt and warp. It is also brittle; if you drop it, it might crack.
2. PETG (The "Workhorse")
What is it? Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol. It’s a modified version of the plastic used in water bottles.
Think of it like: A thick Tupperware container or PVC pipe.

Best For: Functional parts, mechanical components, and items that might take a bit of a beating.

Pros: It is the "best of both worlds." It is stronger than PLA, has better heat resistance (won't melt in a car), and has a little bit of flex, so it is less likely to snap under pressure.

Cons: It doesn't handle ultra-fine details quite as well as PLA. It is also difficult to paint or glue.
3. ABS / ASA (The "Industrial" Choice)
What is it? Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. This is the exact plastic used to make LEGO bricks. ASA is a close cousin that is UV-resistant.
Think of it like: Hard molded plastic (like a car dashboard).

Pros: Extremely durable and high heat resistance. ABS can also be "vapor smoothed" with chemicals to look like injection-molded glass. ASA is specifically designed to sit in the sun for years without fading or becoming brittle.

Cons: It is difficult to print (it likes to warp during production) and releases fumes during printing, so we handle these on specialized machines.
4. TPU (The "Flexible" One)
What is it? Thermoplastic Polyurethane.
Think of it like: A car tire or a rubber shoe sole.

Pros: It is indestructible. You can crush it, twist it, and throw it, and it will return to its original shape. It offers great grip and vibration dampening.

Cons: It cannot be used for structural parts because it is too floppy. It is also virtually impossible to sand or paint.
5. CF Nylon (The "Heavy Duty" Choice)
What is it? Nylon filament infused with chopped Carbon Fiber strands.
Think of it like: Industrial-grade composite.
